Gawthorpe '85

History

Gawthorpe Brass ’85 was formed in 1985 by Susan Elsworth and an enthusiastic group of parents in the village of Gawthorpe near Ossett (famous for its Maypole and the World Coal Carrying Championships)

We have a Senior Band, Youth Band, beginners group, and Music Fun Club. Children can start at 2yrs old and progress through the various ensembles to the Senior Band. We are completely self-financing, and therefore rely on subscriptions and public funding.

The band has produced 4 CD’s over the last 10 years .One was ‘Victorious’ in November 2013 – that was the last time we went to Cheltenham. The most recent CD was ‘Marching Onward’ featuring the senior band and the youth band. Heather Lyne our solo horn is one of the longest-serving players being there at the start in 1985. Jessica Whaites is our principal solo cornet
and has just completed her Bsc Hons at York University.

Flugelhorn player Emma Sutcliffe has been with the band from a very young age and is now a very fine player as well as conductor of our youth band. She also studied at York and has a music degree.

Graham Fisher, solo euphonium, has been a loyal member of the band for many years and his wife Sue plays repiano cornet.
Our conductor John Edward came to Gawthorpe in 1994 when the players were quite young and just beginning their journey into Section Four. We are looking forward to playing Divertimento at the Finals.
