Clifton & Lightcliffe B

History

1977 saw the formation of a junior section at the Clifton and Lightcliffe Band. John Clay who had recently returned to the band after 15 years at Black Dyke thought that the younger members of the senior band would benefit from some extra tuition, so on Saturday mornings from the initial group of 4 children the junior band blossomed into an group of 25 players. The group was called the Junior band but over time has included more senior members; these are mainly parents who have brought their children along and decided themselves to take up an instrument. We encourage anyone to come along and join and as time goes by these players will be the foundation of the senior band.

In 2010 the Junior band was changed to the Clifton and Lightcliffe ‘B’ band as we had a large proportion of adults in the ranks.

The 'B' band first entered the National Brass Band Championships qualifying rounds in the fourth section at St Georges Hall Bradford, and over the past seven years made steady progress up the table, where finally in 2014 they became the Fourth Section Yorkshire Champions and represented Yorkshire at the National Finals in Cheltenham. In 2017 they qualified again in the fourth section and are delighted to be representing Yorkshire.

This year sees the 40th anniversary of our B Band with John Clay still at the helm as Musical Director and to mark this we are holding a celebration at the end of September.
