For most of their 176-year history, the band hasn’t competed. In recent years the Band qualified twice for the fourth section national finals and were promoted to the third section last year competing in the North East Regionals for the first time in that section.
The Band are blessed with a core group of players most of whom are adult learners with a few more experienced players around the stand. They focus on being there for and raising money for charity and community organisations in Knaresborough, enjoying social activities together and performing, all three are considered of equal importance in making the band thrive.
Rehearsals are geared towards improving the standard of brass playing technique as many players haven’t been brought up playing in bands and are really keen to learn. Players rehearse once a week in a local Methodist church and enjoy time in the pub after rehearsal.
Thanks to the friendliness and dedication of the players and committee the band has a high profile in Knaresborough and enjoys a fantastic relationship with Knaresborough’s twin town in Germany which they will be visiting in 2020. Before then the band has a series of concerts in the diary and will be making a local radio programme featuring the lives of players, local history, along with music specially composed for the Band.
