Barnsley

History

Barnsley Brass has been presenting concerts around South and West Yorkshire for over 110 years. The band is at the heart of the local community, particularly through the strong affinity that exists for former colliery brass bands. During the time of support from the mining industry they were the Barrow Colliery Band. Subsequently, with the mining industry in decline, they had the support of Barnsley Building Society for twenty years.

The band is located within Worsbrough Sports and Development Association with spectacular views around the redeveloped mining sites and little sign of the industrial past. Until recently rehearsal facilities did not complement the idyllic setting. The room was cramped, the roof leaked, and facilities were minimal. Now all this has changed. With the help of a National Lottery grant, we have built an extension, added a pitched roof, a toilet, disabled ramp and kitchen area.

The band last attended the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 2011 during a period of sponsorship by the Barnsley Chronicle newspaper.
