St David's

History

The band was founded by its MD, John Dickson, in 1981 as St David’s High School Band to develop his pupils’ ensemble playing, going on to be Scottish Youth Champions in 1986, at the first attempt.

In 1991, the school band broke new ground - it entered the senior Scottish Championships Fourth Section for the first time, to the amusement of the more established bands.

As players reached the end of their school careers, some wished to continue with the Band. In 1997, the Band adopted a formal constitution, with the name St David’s Brass Band and registered as a Scottish Charity and winning the Scottish Fourth Section in 1998. Many of the today’s members were taught by him.

In 2016, the Band took part in the Edinburgh International Festival Fanfare event, and played at the Opening of the Borders Railway. In recent years, the Band’s fortunes have fluctuated, travelling up from Third section to First section, then journeying back to Third. At the 2017 Scottish Championships, the Band were runners-up, bringing us to Cheltenham once more. In April, St. David’s came first in section at the Fife Brass Band Festival

Next year, the band will return to the Second section with plans to hang around there a while .....

First appearance at Nationals since 2014 (Section 2). Total of 4 previous Nationals appearances, highest Nationals placing of 6th (S4 1998). Most recent appearance at S3 was 2011.
