Newport Borough

History

Newport Borough Brass Band was formed in 1971 by Newport Council’s Music Adviser, Mr Ron Cleake. The Band entered the contesting field in 1985 in the 4th Section, and worked their way through the ranks, reaching the 2nd Section by 1998.  Over the years, the band have represented Wales in the National Finals on two occasions, and are looking forward to making their return after a 25 year absence.  At the turn of the century, the band faced difficulties and went through a re-building period, resulting in them returning to the 4th section.  Under the leadership of musical director Robin Hackett, the band has made steady progress over the last 4 years, gaining promotion from the 4th section to the 3rd section, both locally and nationally.  Musical director Robin is an experienced trombone player, and has performed with the BBC NOW and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a number of the country’s top brass bands, including Cory and Tredegar.  Robin won the 1st Section National Finals in 2009 with the Tongwynlais Band, and also made appearances with them at the British Open and the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall.

Returning to Cheltenham this year, after competing in Section 4 2016 - when they achieved their highest ever Nationals placing of 5th. Total of only 3 previous Nationals appearances. Most recent appearance at S3 was 1991.
