Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver

History

The Midsomer Norton and Radstock Silver Band was formed in July 1980 by Angela Lowe, using instruments from the old Radstock Silver Band, money held in trust from the old Midsomer Norton Silver Band and a £600 grant from the Local Council, which was used to overhaul the instruments.

Angela sadly passed away in June 2003 and in June 2010 Jo Sykes took over as Musical Director and under her leadership the band have gone from strength to strength. In November 2011 the band came 2nd in the 4th Section of the ‘Regional Finals and in March 2012 they won the 4th Section and attended the National Finals. In January 2013, for the first time in their history, the band were promoted to the 3rd Section and in March 2013 they came a very creditable 7th position, in 2014 they came 11th, they came 5th in 2015 and in 2016 they came 3rd and qualified and attended the National Finals in September.

In March this year the band finished in 3rd place and as well as earning themselves a 2nd successive qualification for the National Finals they also finished top of the 3rd section and from January 2018 they will be promoted to the 2nd section, therefore achieving the highest national ranking in the history of the band.

The Band also has a very successful Brass Academy with around 30 players. Led by Jo, with a Beginners Group and a Training Band, these players are the future of the Band.

The only band to return to Section 3 Final after competing here in 2016. Qualified for Nationals for first time in 2012 (S4), only appeared at Nationals twice. Best Nationals placing of 13th (S3 2016).
