Otterbourne

History

There is evidence of a band in the Allbrook and Otterbourne area of Hampshire dating back to c. 1923 (possibly earlier). Formerly known as Hampshire Concert Brass and then City of Winchester Brass, Otterbourne Brass was formed over thirty years ago by a gentleman by the name of John Knight. He decided to set up what was then called Hampshire Concert Brass. The band became highly successful over the years competing in regional and national competitions. Gradually as more and more members of the band came from other walks of life as well as the youth organisation it was decided in the late 1970s to change the name of the band to City of Winchester Brass. The band is now made up of players from all across the region stretching from Basingstoke in the north to Southampton and Portsmouth on the coast and from Romsey in the west to Havant and Petersfield in the east of Hampshire. We include in our membership people from all walks of life such as teachers, military musicians, company executives and many other different professions.

Otterbourne have recently secured the experienced & talented “stick” on Mr Melvin White who has both played and directed Championship Bands in the London area, the West of England, the Midlands and Wales. In addition, he has qualified bands for National finals on over 30 occasions, the vast proportion for The Royal Albert Hall. Since joining Otterbourne Brass in late 2015, Melvin has conducted the band at 8 contests, with excellent results with the band only being seen outside the prizes on a single occasion, and has been automatically promoted back into the 1st section. The band continues to journey from strength to strength with local community support alone.

And lastly, the slogan we hope you will hear soon... “Up The Otters!!!”
