Glossop Old Band are a local brass band based in Glossop, Derbyshire, believed to have been originally formed around 1830.
The band experienced a highly rewarding 20-year period under Barry Hinde in the 1960’s, 70’s and early 80’s, winning many competitions and gaining a well deserved reputation for quality concert work.
In 1990 the band entered a period of decline and financial problems, resulting in the departure of the conductor and many players. This situation continued for almost three years with playing members dropping to around eight by early 1993. Thanks mainly to the efforts of Ken Cant (a former player) a full team was established in mid 1993. Jim Cant (Ken’s older brother) was appointed as musical director in November 1993. Contesting re-started in early 1994 resulting in a two year period where the band was unbeaten in the fourteen contests entered. Prizes continued to come Glossop’s way – 33 prizes from 33 competitions from 1993 to the early 2000’s, including 21 firsts, 8 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 fourths. Between 1999 and 2003, Glossop made appearances at the National Finals (Championship Section), the British Open and also the All England Master.
Unfortunately another period of decline started in 2009 and the band ceased competing in 2011. Les Webb took over the baton in 2015, and secured the band a place at the National Finals in 2016. Duncan Beckley took the helm at the beginning of 2017, securing a win at the Midlands Regional Championships and another invitation to the National Finals.
Qualified for Section 2 Final for second successive year (14th in 2016). Total of 9 previous Nationals appearances, including an impressive double win S3 1994 S2 1995 (& 3rd S1 1996), as well as 1 RAH appearance.
