Dalkeith & Monktonhall

History

The Dalkeith and Monktonhall Brass Band is an amalgamation of the Dalkeith Burgh and Monktonhall Colliery Brass Bands. As with many mining bands in the 1980’s both bands found it difficult to survive as funding and player’s diminished and so, in 1989, the band’s amalgamated to become the band which survives today.

The band is based in the small town of Prestonpans on the outskirts of Edinburgh. We are East Lothian’s only competing Brass Band and we’re extremely proud of our heritage and close links with our local community.

The band has seen many successes over the years with the most recent flourish of contest success coming under the baton of the band’s current MD, James Chamberlain. From 2008, the band has represented Scotland and our local community on 3 occasions at the National Finals, with our appearance in September of this year being our 4th.

As well as contesting, the band has been lucky enough to take to the stage of theatre twice in the past 3 years. In 2014, the band played the part of Grimley Colliery in the stage production of ‘Brassed Off’ and in 2015, the band took part in the Edinburgh Festival in ‘En Avant, Marche!’.

First Nationals appearance since 2012 (Section 1). As Dalkeith & Monktonhall, a total of 6 previous Nationals appearances, highest placing of 7th (S3 2008). Band created from merger in 1989 between Dalkeith Burgh and Monktonhall Colliery Silver. Total of 8 previous Nationals between them (6 Dalkeith, 2 Monktonhall). Most recent appearance at S2 was 2010.
